AAAs a Briton in Washington, you’re never far from a conversation about how the special relationship is fading, a 20th-century relic destined for the scrapheap. Britain and America don’t agree on Iran, people fret. We’re not aligned on China, they sigh. It’s usually overblown, this concern, but a serious incident of late suggests the old transatlantic alliance really might be coming apart at the seams. The incident is being whispered about anxiously in the corridors of power. Senior British diplomats are shaken to their usually unflappable core. “Worst moment since Suez,” they mumble. It is an act of American aggression so heinous that Britain will surely have to retaliate, with force if needs be. Come back, Churchill, all is forgiven.
